Japanese history buffs are sure to recognize the name and face of Sakamoto Ryoma, who had a huge effect on the feudal Japan of his time. But as one Japanese Twitterer has discovered, the Sakamoto we are all familiar with may not be what we had imagined at all…

Sakamoto Ryoma was born into a low-class merchant samurai family in the early 1800s, and influenced what would become the start of the Meiji Era before his untimely assassination at the young age of 31. Even today, he is considered one of the most influential people in Japanese history.

But, as Twitter-user toko_ssks discovered in passing by a sign reading “Statue of Sakamoto Ryoma”, the great samurai appears to have not even been a person at all.

How have Japanese netizens been taking this shocking revelation?

“History has changed!”

“What’s the meaning of this?!”

“This sure is surprising, isn’t it?”

“He’s been reincarnated.”

“He’s a lot more orange than I imagined.”

It may take everyone a while to get used to the idea that their hero isn’t quite what they thought him to be, but at least he’s cute. I’m sure they’ll warm up to him soon enough!
