Here’s what US$90 worth of katsu curry looks like at CoCo Ichibanya: A mountain of cutlets!

KC 0 2

Thought we were going on a diet after that giant pickle burger? Think again!

After his recent experience taking on a gigantic pickle burger from Burger King, we wouldn’t have been surprised if our Japanese-language reporter P.K. Sanjun had just decided to take a break from food in general for a while. But P.K. is always hungry for more, and this time he was hungry for curry.

Specifically, he was hungry for katsu curry, the variety topped with a pork cutlet (called “katsu” in Japanese). With his stomach grumbling, P.K. was just about to head to the nearest branch of curry chain CoCo Ichibanya, also known as CoCo Ichi.

KC 1

But before walking out the door, he stopped to grapple with a difficult question. When eating katsu curry, you generally have to make a decision. Do you enjoy the cutlet gradually, alternating between bites of it and spoonfuls of rice and curry sauce? Or do you eat all of the rice first and save the cutlet for a fantastic finale of pork?

P.K. wanted to do both, and hit upon an idea for achieving his gluttonous goal. See, in addition to offering really tasty curry, CoCo Ichi lets customers customize their curry by picking from a last of toppings. You can even order additional helpings of the same topping if one of them has a particularly strong hold on your heart.

So P.K. wondered, just how many cutlets could he get with his curry for 10,000 yen (roughly US$90)?

▼ Time to turn that paper money into katsu curry!

KC 2

A look at the restaurant’s menu revealed that a standard-sized plate of curry costs 463 yen, and a cutlet topping 290, so a quick calculation told us that for 10,000 yen we should be able to get 32 slices of katsu. But though CoCo Ichi has a reputation for polite, friendly service (even by Japan’s high standards), we wouldn’t recommend showing up unannounced and asking for such a massive meal, so we decided to call ahead to check if they could accommodate us.

“We don’t have enough cutlets on hand today, but if you give us until tomorrow, sure, we can do that,” the employee who took our call said. “But if we slice them into bite-sized pieces, we won’t be able to stack them,” he added apologetically, “so is it OK if they’re unsliced?”

We assured him that as long as they were willing to cook up 10,000 yen worth of katsu curry for us, we could handle cutting our own meat. The next day P.K. walked into the restaurant, sat down, and the waiter, gripping the platter with both hands, brought him the katsu curry of his dreams.

KC 6

P.K. immediately named his plate “Mt. Katsu,” which narrowly edged out “Ayer’s Rock of Katsu” and “Ace Clean-Up Batter King Champion of the Curry World” for the honor.

KC 7

Having never actually seen 32 slices of katsu all together, P.K. couldn’t resist posing for a picture with them like they were his favorite celebrities.

KC 8

Then, like he and said favorite celebrities were the sole survivors of a plane crash in the Andes, he couldn’t resist eating them.

KC 12

But while his heart was willing, P.K. found his stomach wasn’t quite up to the task of eating as many pork cutlets as some people consume in an entire year right then and there. He maxed out at four, while also dutifully finishing off his rice and curry. He then took the remaining 28 slices back to RocketNews24 headquarters, where the rest of the staff helped P.K. finish his work assignment.

KC 13

After all, that’s what good coworkers do, right?

Magical girl anime PreCure! has its own themed hotel rooms in Japan

PH 0

More than 10,000 guests have stayed in hotel’s magical girl-decorated rooms.

Thanks to its recent addition to Netflix’s lineup, hit children’s anime PreCure! has a chance at becoming North America’s newest mainstream success story. But while the streaming giant is starting by adapting 2012’s Smile PreCure! into the reworked and retitled Glitter Force, there’s actually been a PreCure anime chapter on Japanese TV non-stop since 2004, with the latest embodiment of the magical girl franchise being the currently airing Mahotsukai PreCure!

But PreCure isn’t just a regular fixture on Japanese television. It’s become such a part of the children’s pop cultural landscape that it’s also got a presence in the travel industry, specifically at the Ike no Taira hotel in Nagano Prefecture.

PH 1

Two of the closest attractions are scenic Lake Shirakaba and the Family Land amusement park. As you can guess from its name, Family Land tends to draw travelers with young children, so since 2010 the hotel has been offering special guestrooms decorated with characters from whatever the most recent PreCure! series is.

PH 2

PH 3

Starting March 4, guests will be able to book one of six special Mahotsukai PreCure!-themed rooms. While Ike no Taira has yet to reveal any images of the newest iteration of their anime tie-up, the photos seen here of previous years’ versions show that the hotel goes all-out with the motif, and the results are sure to make fans squeal with delight.

Aside from being surrounded by the PreCure! cast, guests who book the special rooms can take home a bundle of related merchandise, including toothbrushes, mugs, notepads, puzzles, and hair scrunchies. Those who upgrade to the Mahotsukai PreCure! Dream Room (as opposed to the less expensive Mahotsukai PreCure! PreCure! Room) will also receive a special shoulder bag.

PH 4

Also included in the package are passes to Family Land, plus a cosplay photo dressed as one of the PreCure! girls.

PH 5

Of course, as with many corners of fandom for anime originally intended for little girls, PreCure! has a large number of adult fans as well. Still, Ike no Taira says that the majority of more than 10,000 guests who’ve stayed in its PreCure! rooms to date have been families. That’s not to say that childless travelers can’t book the themed rooms, but it’s unlikely that the hotel keeps an adult-sized costume on hand for them to take pictures in.

Reservations for the Mahotsukai PreCure! rooms can be made online here.

Sword enthusiasts, here’s the katana documentary you won’t want to miss! 【Video】

4K_Katana_Project_SPOT

This ultra high-definition documentary is scheduled to come out this year. You can help support its production, and get some pretty cool things for doing so too!

A hero is only as good as his weapon, so that means if you happen to be a samurai, your weapon better be pretty good. And of course, since this is Japan we’re talking about, you can bet that the process of making that weapon will be an art unto itself. Perhaps this is why there are so many people who are captivated by the precision and beauty of the Japanese katana.

A true katana takes nearly a full year to make, through joint efforts of master sword smiths, sword sharpeners, scabbard makers, coating masters, and silver artisans. A team of filmmakers have delved into the world of Japanese sword making to bring the process of this intricate art form to the public in exquisite, ultra high-definition (4K) detail.

▼ Complete with epic English-speaking narratives and the wildest sword-making music ever

The crew of the 4K Katana Project have recorded nearly 15,000 hours of footage, equal to 100 terabytes of data! You can follow the true masters at work through each step of the sword making process from shaping the blade…

1

…to heat treating…

2

…to clay application…

3

…to polishing!

4

There are plans to release the documentary this August, but as you can imagine it’s no quick or simple task to edit and produce 15,000 hours of footage! That’s why the project has created a crowd-funding page, and of course they aren’t going to let their donors walk away empty-handed. Donation plans start from 2,500 yen (approximately US$22), with a gift of an “original Japanese sword ear pick” (for those tough battles against ear wax) up to the maximum donation amount of 9,200,000 yen which will get one generous donor an actual Yoshihara-made katana, among a slew of other gifts.

If you are interested in seeing this film through, you can also follow the project on its Facebook page here for updates.
