In case you didn’t already know that Jackie Chan is a total badass.

Movie star and martial artist Jackie Chan is best known for performing eye-popping stunts that combine near-insane levels of risk with a kind of slapstick humor, usually without the benefit of wires, safety harnesses, or camera tricks because screw you that’s why!

He’s known for nearly always performing his own stunts in movies, so much so that he even has the Guinness World Record for “Most Stunts by a Living Actor.” He’s broken numerous bones and parts of his body over the years, even coming close to death when he fractured his skull filming the 1986 Hong Kong film Armour of God.

▼ Jackie Chan almost died for this….

One of the reasons Chan isn’t afraid to put his literal balls on the line (see Mr. Nice Guy, tablesaw scene) is because he’s an expert freerunner. Freerunning, for those that don’t know (and I’m going to pretend I didn’t have to just look this up myself), is basically parkour, which is basically jumping through a cityscape like a deranged yet-highly-acrobatic monkey.

To see what I mean, check out this compilation of Chan’s best freerunning scenes put together by YouTuber Jackie Chan Greece (any relation?).

Is that insane or what? The man is like a human ping pong ball, blithely bouncing off the possibility of severe injury, dismemberment and/or death. Remember, Chan performs all these scenes himself, without any CGI trickery or basic safety precautions, just for your entertainment.

So go ahead, watch it again. That’s what the ghost of Chan’s sense of self preservation would want. Maybe that’s why he’s moved on to producing K-pop groups instead. Much less chance of death that way.
