New Hunter x Hunter escape room has you take the Hunter exam, snack on anime-tastic food

You too can be a hunter like Gon and Killua by enrolling in the Hunter exam escape game!

Yoshihiro Togashi’s oft-delayed manga masterpiece Hunter x Hunter is beloved all over the world for its zany cast, hot-blooded shonen battles and its great sense of humor. Ever since protagonist Gon Freecs and his best friend Killua Zoldyck attained their hunter licenses, they’ve faced adventure after adventure and met a whole host of friends along the way.

They actually met each other during the examination to get those licenses, as well as other party members Leorio and Kurapika. And now there’s a real world place for you to challenge the hunter exam with your own party of up to four friends!

The escape room has plans to be hosted at multiple locations throughout Japan, with Osaka, Sapporo, Nagoya and Fukuoka listed as future alternatives to the flagship Tokyo escape room, which will run from March 9 through to June.

Patrons will be assigned an entrant number, then enter into the running to earn their own hunter license, which will allow you to become a pro hunter of whatever you like – high-bounty bandits, world class delicacies, ghosts and ghouls. But – uh oh! The sinister clown Hisoka has interfered with the proceedings, and it looks like things might turn into something of a bloodbath. Survive to win your license!

▼ Don’t worry too much, though – creepy clowns aside, the FAQ says there won’t be any jump scares.

You can order your ticket online, where a standard pre-sales ticket will cost you 3,600 yen (US$32.30). If you’re willing to shell out 6,600 yen (US$59.26) you can receive a special bonus at the event site itself: a themed USB drive that’s packed with fun information and will allow you to access the exclusive, Hunters-only website featured in the manga!

▼ The USB pops out of your license card, just like in the series itself

Once you’ve had your harrowing hunter exam, you can purchase goods to reminds you of your experience. Stickers, clear files and so on are available featuring the art from the escape room, and there are even extravagant offerings like these:

▼ A hooded jacket in small, medium and large sizes: 5,800 yen plus tax.

▼ A clipboard and notebook combination: 3,800 yen plus tax.

▼ Perhaps the most exciting item: a water glass so you can see what “nen” abilities you suit the best!

Once your shopping is done, you can kick back and unwind at the affiliated cafe. They’re serving some super fun drinks and snacks themed after the anime that you won’t want to miss out on! All prices are without tax.

▼ First up is the 1,000 yen shaved ice cone that looks like the announcer character Beans.

▼ The suspiciously named “Illusionist Hisoka’s Trump Dog” is 880 yen and comes with a playing card.

▼ It’s the water test, but drinkable! 463 yen plus tax will net you this beverage and a random free coaster.

Social media is already alight with happy fans broadcasting their entrant numbers and showing off their licenses…or their “failure” cards, which seem to be quite numerous. You really have to be the top of the crop to score a pro hunter license!

▼ A successful pro hunter!

▼ And a team of unsuccessful ones.

▼ A feast fit for a hunter!

▼ Beans looks a bit too excited to be eaten.

You can get a 300 yen discount on ticket prices as a student, but regardless of your age it’s in your best interest to pre-order tickets: the price for tickets on the door is 4,100 yen and there’s no option of securing a cool USB for yourself, as those are pre-order only.
