Pocket Monster stars strike the iconic pose of an often overlooked series veteran.

When it comes to cool new Pokémon merch, it’s pretty much a given that franchise mascot Pikachu will be represented, and these days probably Eevee too. Sure enough, they’re both part of the newest batch of goodies hitting Pokémon Center superstores and the Pokémon Online Store later this month, but the real star is another Pocket Monster species.

This time, it’s Wobbuffet’s turn to shine, as part of the “Everybody is Wobbuffet” celebration. As the name implies, the blue Psychic-type is serving as a muse for other Pokémon to imitate, pantomiming his iconic awkward pose.

Along with Wobbuffet himself, of course there’s Pikahcu and Eevee, plus master-of-disguise Ditto, Combee, and Audino. The plushies above are priced at 1,800 yen (US$16.20), while the more compact versions with chains to clip onto your bag or elsewhere are just 1,100 yen.

Oddly enough, though, some of the Everybody is Wobbuffet merchandise isn’t available in Wobbuffet versions, like the carabiner clip pouches (1,100 yen)…

…or the standouts of the collection, these strap-equipped mobile pouches (2,000 yen), which are limited to just Pikachu, Eevee, and Ditto doing their Wobbuffet poses.

Speaking of which, if you’ve ever wondered why Wobbuffet is always seen somewhat self-consciously laughing and holding a hand to his head, it’s because of his name in the Japanese versions of the Pokémon anime and manga. There he’s known as Sonansu, which is a play on words with “Sou nan su,” a slightly nervous way of saying “Yep, that’s how it is,” showing the speaker is a little embarrassed about asserting that they’re correct.

In addition to the soft and squeezable items, the Everybody is Wobbuffet lineup also includes practical things like smartphone cases, keychains, and coffee mugs, all of which become available on April 27.
