8 Reasons Millennial Women Aren’t Trying To Commit Any Time Soon
Hollywood would love to have you believe women are sitting by the phone and waiting for men to call, or plotting and planning ways to get a ring on their fingers.
I’m not sure about you, but the women I know aren’t doing that.
In fact, they’re doing quite the opposite.
Most of the women I know are too busy studying, partying and traveling to spend time worrying about settling down.
Of course, there are loads of women who would love to get married, and that’s perfectly okay.
But, the age-old stereotype of women waiting around for men just doesn’t hold up anymore.
Not so long ago, women kind of had to settle down because there really wasn’t much else to do.
The majority of women were financially dependent on their husbands, and it was also pretty frowned upon for young women to be gallivanting all over the place, anyway.
But, we’re sure gallivanting now.
Our newfound social freedom means there are so many options available to us other than marriage.
Don’t get me wrong; this isn’t me slating the settled life.
I’m just pointing out women stopped “needing” to get married, and soon, they discovered there were various other fun things to do.
In fact, I know many women who have turned down propositions of security and long-term love.
So, what’s making us women stay single longer? Here are a few ideas:
1. We have career options.
We have the same social, educational and economic freedom as men.
2. We have our own money.
We don’t actually need our husbands to support us.
3. We don’t suffer from social stigma.
People have clearly always had premarital sex, but it wasn’t as common or out in the open as it is now.
As social restrictions relax, so do our concerns about getting hitched.
4. We are living longer.
At the beginning of the last century, we were only expected to live until our 30s or 40s.
So, we kind of had to get a move on.
These days, people are getting married in their 30s or 40s.
5. We can have kids later.
These days, good healthcare and increased life expectancy means you can have children at a much later age, if you want to.
6. We have social media.
I’m not just talking about Tinder.
We are the connected generation.
We can start chatting with anyone from anywhere.
We can book a flight to the other side of the world in a heartbeat.
In previous times, you probably would’ve met your bae at the local youth club or through your mom’s friend.
7. We are scared.
Higher divorce rates means many of us grew up with separated parents.
This has possibly made us a bit skeptical about marriage.
8. We are the “Netflix and chill” generation.
You don’t actually have to commit to someone to get the benefits of being in a relationship.
Many people enjoy good company and good sex, all while remaining single.
Of course, that comes with a host of other problems.
But that’s for another article.
