But getting 4-year-old Kirill to his new home was no easy task. Doug and Lesley Facey, a couple from Paradise, Newfoundland, first decided they wanted to adopt back in 2012.

But getting 4-year-old Kirill to his new home was no easy task. Doug and Lesley Facey, a couple from Paradise, Newfoundland, first decided they wanted to adopt back in 2012.

After months of legal hurdles and screening procedures, the Faceys saw a photo of Kirill. Doug immediately thought of his father, Chris.

"How could we say no to this little boy when I have grown up with someone who was the same all my life and it never bothered me or stopped him in one way or another," Doug Facey told BuzzFeed Canada.

Finally, last June, it was time to travel to Kirill's orphanage in Karaganda and meet their son.

"It was almost surreal, the meeting with him. It was something that seemed to be so far off in the distance for the longest time, then the next thing we knew were there," said Facey. "The meeting day is a day that neither one of us would forget."

Kirill had been passed up for adoption several times before, likely because of his hand, said Facey.

"The mentality over there is he’s not perfect, and that’s a bunch of poppycock because anyone who speeds five seconds around Kirill knows that won’t stop him."
