The flavour is so delectable it ranks in the top three favourites for Japanese ice cream lovers.

Häagen-Dazs has given Japanese fans some of the most unusual flavours ever to appear on the market. There’s been Salty Vanilla and Caramel, Sakura, Matcha Green Tea Fondue and even Chestnut with Adzuki Red Bean. To welcome autumn this year, the luxurious ice cream brand is bringing out “Murasaki Imo”, or “Purple Potato”, for the first time in three years, and fans have been over the moon since the new release was revealed on Twitter.

Ice cream lovers were quick to express their excitement over the new purple ice cream.

“OMG, I want to eat this!”
“I absolutely love this flavour!”
“I’m so looking forward to eating their purple coloured ice cream!”
“Everyone needs to buy this so they’ll keep bringing it out every year!”
“I’m so happy Haagen-Dazs is resurrecting the purple sweet potato flavour!”

First released in August 2012, the Murasaki Imo flavour made a seasonal return the following year, due to its immense popularity. Absent from the market for the past three years, the purple potato variety is making a comeback this year after it was revealed to be the third most loved flavour by fans.

The frozen dessert is said to contain the gentle sweetness of purple potato in the ice cream, with the addition of a purple potato sauce giving it the appearance of an adzuki red bean topping you’d usually find on a traditional Japanese sweet. The delicate flavours and beautiful purple hue are said to create a luxurious and memorable dessert.

On sale from 30 August for a limited time at supermarkets and convenience stores around the country, the sweets retail for 294 yen (US$2.88) each. With no word yet on whether this will be available again next year, be sure to pick one up now while you can!
