Range covers drinks hot and cold, with and without caffeine.

If desserts became sentient and formed their own society, no doubt crème brûlée would be a member of its aristocracy. After all, any sweet indulgence that demands three separate pronunciation marks in its name is clearly of noble standing.

And yet the Japanese arm of McDonald’s, the archetypical inexpensive fast food chain, is using crème brûlée as the muse for a trio of new beverages. While that may seem like a tall task, McDonald’s Japan has shown plenty of gourmet flourishes before in creating dessert drinks. What’s more, the crème brûlée-inspired items will be offered through its McCafe by Barista sub-brand of mini coffee houses located inside of select McDonald’s branches.

The star of the lineup, pictured above, is the Crème Brûlée Frappe, a blended ice beverage topped with caramel sauce, crème brûlée-flavored whipped cream, and crumbled sugar cookies. The variety of ingredients promises a mix of sweet and bitter notes, plus a number of textures to enjoy with every sip.

If you’re in need of some caffeine, the Crème Brûlée Latte, seen in the center of the above image, is an espresso enhanced by crème brûlée syrup drizzled over crème brûlée syrup whipped cream, once again accompanied by sugar cookie pieces. Finally, the Iceed Crème Brûlée Latte, seen on the far right, brings all of the special ingredients together, crowning an iced latte with crème brûlée syrup, caramel sauce, crème brûlée whipped cream, and crumbled sugar cookies.

Prices start for the Crème Brûlée Latte at 350 yen (US$3.40), for the Ice Crème Brûlée Latte at 390 yen, and for the top-of-the-line Crème Brûlée Frappe at 460 yen. All three beverages are on sale now at McCafe by Barista locations, and will be available for a limited time.
