One taste of toasted egg mushipan bread and you’ll never go back to eating it the normal way!
We take Japan’s simple pleasure of a steamed cake and push it to a whole new level of deliciousness.
If you live in Japan, or have had the pleasure of raiding one of its convenience stores while traveling here, you will most likely have tried mushipan, which is a type of extremely fluffy cake made by steaming. It comes in a variety of flavors but the egg mushipan is one of the most common. It’s a simple taste but undeniably good with a pleasantly mild sweetness floating in a lighter than air texture.
But we’re about to show you a way to take this enjoyable eating experience and super-charge it to one of the best snacks you’ll ever eat! It is called the Toasted Egg Mushipan.
The name perfectly illustrates how simple it is to make. All you have to do is toast it on the highest setting of your toaster oven for about two and a half minutes. To try it ourselves, we chose the 7-Eleven Premium Shittori Tamago Mushipan for 90 yen (US$0.77), proving that sometimes we can have nice things.
For best results you should make four or five cuts along the top of the mushipan both vertically and horizontally.
Then, with the wrapper removed, place it in the toaster oven.
After about a minute and a half a sweet aroma will begin to fill the air. When the chime goes off your mushipan should be nicely browned. And that’s it — it’s ready for you to eat!
The surface is crispy like a cookie but the inside is warm and fluffy like a perfectly cooked pancake. The natural taste of the mushipan was amplified by the toasting more than we could imagine.
But then we thought, “Why stop here?” We took another mushipan, and after cutting it wedged some little pats of butter into the crevices.
When toasting for the same amount of time and at the same heat, the butter melts and soaks into the mushipan for an even richer and more decedent taste!
It’s all just that simple to make something that you wouldn’t believe only cost 90 yen. Although we got great results from the 7-Eleven Premium Shittori Tamago Mushipan, there’s no reason why any other egg mushipan wouldn’t work. If you’re very daring you might even try different flavors too, but we guarantee that if you eat an egg mushipan like this, you’ll never go back to the normal way again.
