Preorders open for Godzilla: King of the Guitars, only five to be made
Bear in mind, it will stomp a trail of destruction through your bank account too.
Legend has it that when the balance of music is thrown off, something awakens. A guitar so powerful that it could be called a “god” emerges to bring order back to nature. Once it achieves this, the guitar returns to slumber in the watery depths.
And now’s your chance to get a piece of the legend with one of only five Godzilla Guitar Awakening Version axes made by ESP Guitars.
With an alder body in the shape of the king of the monsters ample room is given for all 24 frets of the maple neck and ebony fingerboard of this beast. The best part is that with the flick of a switch on Godzilla’s left foot the fretboard and body light up in strategic locations such as Godzilla’s always impressive scutes.
Such a guitar made an appearance last year in the possession of Toshihiko Takamizawa, guitarist of the long-running rock band The Alfee.
These guitars will not be exact replicas of Takamizawa’s but are largely based on it. Even the promotional pictures currently shown on ESP’s website may be different from the final result of the carefully crafted guitars.
ESP has begun accepting orders (from within Japan only) for the Godzilla Guitar Awakening Version on 7 August and will continue to do so until 30 September via the Godzilla Store Website. This might seem like a long time to sell five guitars, but hardcore fans may need some time to get financial backers in order to meet the 5,550,000 yen (US$52,000) price.
To make matters worse, these guitars won’t ship until December which is after the expected sales tax hike set to take place this October. So, including tax, one of these puppies will ultimately set you back a cool 6,105,000 yen ($57,500). On the bright side, shipping is free.
It’s a gigantic price for a gigantic guitar but those with the means inside Japan ought to grab one quick before they’re all gone.
Meanwhile, for the rest of us poor schlubs, fret not because there is hope. There’s always a chance a Godzilla Guitar Awakening Version will wind up in some train station lost and found someday. Failing that, we can always ask Shota Mori and his cat to make one.
