There’s a brand-new Chainsaw Man attraction coming to Universal Studios Japan

11:13 cherishe 0 Comments

USJ promises “realistic experience you can feel with your entire body.”

Universal Studios Japan had been telling us that its Donkey Kong Country expansion to the Super Nintendo World section of the amusement park would be open in the spring of 2024. Unfortunately, design and construction are taking a little longer than anticipated, and so the opening has been pushed back to the latter half of this year.

No doubt that means there are a lot of people who’re now delaying their own plans to visit USJ until the back half of this year, but now there’s an added bonus to doing so, as a Chainsaw Man attraction is coming to Universal Studios Japan too!

USJ is no stranger to anime collaborations, owing a great deal of its rapidly rising popularity over the past few years to a number of tie-ups with popular animated series including Demon Slayer, Spy x Family, and One Piece. This will be its first time, though, to create an attraction for Chainsaw Man, which exploded in worldwide popularity following the premiere of the original manga series’ TV anime adaptation in the fall of 2022.

The exact format of the Chainsaw Man attraction, which will be open for a limited time, is still under wraps, but USJ is promising “a recreation of the [Chainsaw Man] world with overwhelming scale and quality, providing a realistic experience you can feel with your entire body,” and that fans will be able to “enjoy the thrilling experience of immersing themselves within the extreme and unpredictable Chainsaw Man world.”

It’s worth pointing out that Chainsaw Man has notably more violent and sexualized content than many of the other more family-friendly anime series that Universal Studios Japan has partnered with before. That said, the park had no qualms about creating a Resident Evil walk-through haunted house/maze last year that was intense enough that it was restricted to park visitors age 13 and up, so maybe they won’t feel the need to tone down Chainsaw Man’s edginess too much.

The Chainsaw Man attraction is scheduled to open this fall.

Studio Ghibli director Goro Miyazaki creates charity character T-shirt for Japan’s 24-Hour TV

09:13 cherishe 0 Comments

Hayao Miyazaki’s son creates a new anime character on behalf of Studio Ghibli despite programme’s embezzlement scandal.

Every summer, Nippon TV holds a telethon called 24-Hour Television, which raises funds to support charities related to welfare, environmental causes and disaster relief. Held annually since 1978, this year marks the programme’s 25th anniversary, and to help aid charity efforts, Studio Ghibli director Goro Miyazaki has leant his hand to the proceedings, creating an original character for the show.

The charity event is generally based on the theme “Love Saves the Earth”, and this year’s theme takes things one step further by asking the question: “Will Love Save the Earth?” It’s a powerful thought befitting the environmentally conscious ethos of Studio Ghibli and Goro, who directed Tales From Earthsea, and it bears all the well-known trademarks of the artist’s whimsical style.

▼ “Will Love Save the Earth? I have no idea. What do you think?”

The canine character might look similar to Heen from Goro Miyazaki’s 2020 movie, Earwig and the Witch, but it’s actually a newly drawn character created especially for the television event. As well as acting as the face for this year’s telethon, the cute, disillusioned pup will be gracing a series of T-shirts for people to purchase, with proceeds going towards charity.

The T-shirts are available in three colours — white, yellow and grey — and can be purchased for 2,000 yen (US$12.58) at Aeon stores around Japan from 4 July. The shirts will then be available at the 24-Hour Television online store, as well as the Nippon TV stores at Shiodome and Tokyo Station, and the TV station’s official shop, Tree Village, in Tokyo, Osaka and Hakata from 12 July.

Eagle-eyed fans will know that Studio Ghibli was recently acquired by Nippon TV, the station that holds the 24-Hour Television telethon, so the tie-up keeps everything within the company. It has to be mentioned, though, that the programme and the station that runs it recently came under fire when it was revealed in 2023 that an affiliated TV executive was found to have embezzled over 2.6 million yen from 24-Hour Television donations over a nine-year period from 2014.

Many people have been calling for the show to be cancelled in light of the scandal, but the network has decided to proceed with the telethon, pointing out the positive aspects of the funds raised. Critics, however, say the scandal adds an extra layer of meaning to Miyazaki’s artwork, which can be seen to address the question mark hanging over the future of the show.

This is the third time for Studio Ghibli to provide a charity T-shirt design for the telethon, though, after producing designs in 2006 and 2010, and it’s Goro’s first, so it’s unclear whether the Ghibli pooch is making a profound statement over the future of the programme or the world in general.

Either way, the show will be televised over two days, from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on 31 August-1 September.

Star Kebab’s kebab sushi roll in Akihabara isn’t on the menu anymore but don’t let that stop you

22:13 cherishe 0 Comments

When a restaurant stops selling your favorite menu item, sometimes you have to roll matters into your own hands.

The kebab norimaki (sushi roll) at Star Kebab is our Japanese-language reporter Ikuna Kamezawa’s favorite thing to eat in Tokyo’s Akihabara district. In fact, at least one other member of our team can second that, as sampling it was a life-changing experience for him. It seems like a large portion of the general population is also in agreement, especially after the eatery stated that it would close down for good in February of last year citing coronavirus-related losses and the poor health of its owner, only to reopen again just over a month later amid many well wishes from long-time devotees.

The food in question is an original creation of Star Kebab that fuses two different cuisines into one by means of a sushi roll (rice inside an outer nori wrapping) filled with kebab meat and pickles. Its resulting taste is a harmonious blend of delicious flavors and textures that always has Ikuna coming back for more.

That’s why she was aghast upon her latest visit to Star Kebab only to discover that the kebab norimaki was no longer on the menu.

▼ Star Kebab’s kebab norimaki of bygone days

She asked the worker if it was really, truly gone, to which they replied “yes” in an assured tone. She couldn’t catch the reason for its departure because of some loud noises in the street, but it sounded like this development had happened sometime within the past half year. “But it was SO delicious…WHY??!!” Ikuna wailed in her head.

She then started blaming herself for not visiting the shop for such a long time, as if that were the determining factor. However, what’s done is done, and she couldn’t change the past. The kebab norimaki wasn’t going to magically reappear, no matter how much she wished for it.

Suddenly, she caught sight of a section of the menu featuring side orders, including pickles–one of the main stars of the kebab norimaki. The wheels starting turning in her mind.

What if she were to purchase some pickles and kebab meat on its own and then combine them into a norimaki herself at home? It seemed like an interesting idea…so she requested a box packed with those two fillings and paid 1,000 yen (US$6.35) for it. Weighing it once she got home, the delicious mix weighed 248 grams (8.75 ounces).

That’s when she noticed something unfortunate–those weren’t pickles mixed in with the chicken, but jalapenos. Oh dear…

She blamed the error on either her pronunciation being bad or a cruel trick of fate. However, as a seasoned writer, she knew that she had to adapt to unexpected challenges thrown her way. She prepared the only other two ingredients she needed–nori and cooked white rice (she recommends keeping it slightly on the firm side)–as well as a cheap bamboo rolling mat from a Japanese 100-yen store.

Actually, it was Ikuna’s very first time making any kind of norimaki in her life. She didn’t know if she were assembling it correctly, but the spread seemed OK so far.

She ran into some trouble when trying to use the bamboo mat. The contents didn’t want to roll together easily at all.

She reduced the amount of rice inside and tried again.

Nope–it still wasn’t cooperating.

A new solution occurred to her and she decided to try increasing the surface area of the nori.

At last Ikuna was able to roll it up!

Somewhat cautiously, she took a bite…

…and tasted a kebab norimaki very similar to the menu item of her memories! Well, almost, except that jalapenos were substituting for pickles. But dare she say it, she might like this version even better.

On a final note, the chicken and jalapeno mixture that she purchased was enough to make roughly three kebab norimaki–so it wasn’t just delicious, but cost-effective, too. This cooking hack will certainly be convenient when she has a huge appetite but isn’t near a Lawson Store 100 to grab one of their dekamori items.

My Neighbor Onigiri-kun – Ghibli’s Toshio Suzuki draws character for rice ball salt packaging

21:13 cherishe 0 Comments

Veteran anime producer helps spread love for Yamaguchi salt.

As the producer of several of Ghibli’s most celebrated anime, Toshio Suzuki has been an instrumental part of the studio’s success, even without hands-on involvement in the film’s visuals. That doesn’t mean that Suzuki lacks artistic talent, though, as he’s now created illustrations for a new line of gourmet onigiri (rice ball) salt.

Okawari Tokyo is a company that produces Omusubi Gochiso ni Naru Oshio, which translates loosely to “Salt that Makes Rice Balls a Delicacy.” The sea salt is produced from the waters of Yuya Bay in Yamaguchi Prefecture, where the seawater mixes with freshwater from the nearby Kakebuchigawa and Awanogawa rivers. This unique combination makes the salt rich in minerals, but lower in bitter-tasting magnesium, which makes it perfect for imparting extra umami and enhancing the natural flavors of the ingredients it’s added to, says Okawari Tokyo, with their primary recommendation being to sprinkle it on rice balls.

The standard packaging is clever enough, with the bag the salt comes in folded and wrapped in paper to resemble a triangular onigiri.

But to really catch people’s eyes, Toshio Suzuki created a character, called “My Neighbor Onigiri-kun,” for a pair of special illustrated packages.

The artwork is full of the charming, low-key whimsy found in the doodles of Studio Ghibli’s artistic creators.

A My Neighbor Onigiri-kun plushie even exists, though it’s not for sale, at least at the moment.

Omusubi Gochiso ni Naru Oshio hasn’t gone on sale quite yet, but it’ll be available at the Ekinaka Biople shop inside Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station starting June 21 and at branches of wellness products chain Biople from July 13, as well through the Okawari Tokyo online store here, priced at 918 yen (US$5.95).

Japan’s Pineapple x Pizza Yes or No General Election results are in, and it’s a landslide

18:13 cherishe 0 Comments

Japanese pizza fans take strong stance in pineapple poll.

Over the past few weeks, you may have noticed an air of tension swirling around your friends, family members, and professional/academic colleagues. That’s only natural, though, since, as we’re all painfully aware, 2024 is an election year.

Regardless of your individual ideology, though, I think we can all agree that now that the votes have been tallied, tempers will cool, and perhaps appetites rise, as the results are in for Pineapple x Pizza Yes or No General Election 2024.

Domino’s Pizza Japan took it upon itself to conduct this important public opinion poll. Really, it was the only responsible thing to do, seeing as how Domino’s itself had reignited the debate over the divisive tropical fruit pizza topping by releasing its new Tropical Twist pizza, which not only has pineapple on the pie but pineapple sauce inside the crust too.

A total of 161,544 votes were collected, and when they were all counted, those in favor of pineapple on pizza won a landslide victory, with 68.1 percent saying “Yes” to the topping versus just 31.9 in the “No” camp.

● Pineapple on pizza?
Yes: 110,003 votes (68.1 percent of total)
No: 51,541 votes (31.9 percent)

▼ The sliced pineapple, conveniently shaped like a circle (a symbol of approval in Japan) celebrates, while the unsliced pineapple, bearing Japan’s X mark of rejection, grudgingly concedes victory to its election rival.

As for voter demographics, pineapple polled especially well with voters casting their ballots trough Domino’s special election website, via social media, and also at the physical polling station the company set up within Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station, the busiest rail station in the world. Those voting inside Domino’s Japan branches were much more evenly divided, and among those voting via the Line messaging app, the anti-pizza part was actually larger.

Social media votes
Yes: 92,822
No: 38,973
● Website votes
Yes: 6,749
No: 1,792
● Line votes
Yes: 7,818
No: 9,108
● In-store votes
Yes: 1,402
No: 1,316
● Shinjuku Station votes
Yes: 1,212
No 352

▼ The Shinjuku Station polling station

Heeding the voice of the people, Domino’s quickly announced the Super Pineapple Sale, a 45-percent discount of small-size delivery orders of the Pineapple Twist Quattro pizza that knocks its price down to 1,870 yen (US$12), from its normal 3,390, between now and July 23.

▼ Pineapple Twist Quatro

In addition, Domino’s is giving away a vacation to Okinawa, Japan’s top pineapple-producing prefecture. Included in the package is a roundtrip airfare for two to Okinawa, two nights’ hotel accommodation (including breakfast), admission to Nago Pineapple Park, and a pineapple pizza-making lesson at Domino’s Pizza Nagomiyazato branch.

The package will be awarded to one winner who retweets the Domino’s Pizza Japan tweet below and includes the hashtag #パイナップルピザ堪能したい, meaning “I want to enjoy pineapple pizza,” between now and 11:59 p.m. on June 23.

Considering how much our taste-tester P.K. Sanjun enjoyed the Pineapple Twist, we imagine we’re going to be seeing a lot of the Domino’s delivery guy at SoraNews24 HQ over the next few days.

Uniqlo creates Oshi no Ko T-shirt line so you can show support for anime idols【Photos】

11:13 cherishe 0 Comments

Idol saga/murder thriller provides fashions for adults and kids.

The oshi part of the title of hit anime/manga Oshi no Ko comes from the verb osu, meaning to support, endorse, or champion a person or idea. It’s a particularly useful word in the idol fan community when talking about one’s personal favorite idol, and now for Oshi no Ko fans who want to show their support for the series, Uniqlo is bringing out a new T-shirt line.

There are a total of five adult-size designs in the lineup, starting with this one with idol Ai Hoshino standing tall on the back.

Swing on over to the front, and you’ll find the declaration “Limitless eternal support for Ai!” appropriately right over the wearer’s heart.

Ai also shows up on a shirt with a much darker color scheme, but as anyone who’s seen/read Oshi no Ko can tell you, it’s not always a bright, cheery story.

Oshi no Ko’s title itself is a play on words, as it can translate either to “My Favorite Idol” or “My Favorite Idol’s Children.” It’s not long before the series’ spotlight shifts from Ai to her son, Aqua, and daughter, Ruby, who share space on this shirt.

Ruby goes on to become a performer herself, joining with Kana Arima and Mem-Cho to make up the idol unit B-Komachi, who appear on the fourth shirt.

And finally, rounding out the adult-size line is a shirt with Ai’s rabbit cosplay outfit.

In addition to the five adult-size shirts, Uniqlo is also releasing four kids-size designs, which is kind of a bold merchandising choice for a series with as much murder in it as Oshi no Ko.

▼ Two of the designs are even exclusive to kids’ sizes.

Each of the adult-size shirts is priced at 1,500 yen (US$9.70) and the kids’ 990. They’re scheduled to go on sale July 5 and can be purchased through the Uniqlo online shop here.

Manga artist Nikiichi Tobita announces hiatus for totally understandable, very happy reason

23:13 cherishe 0 Comments

Given the nature of his series, there’s really no way he could be expected to be working at a time like this.

Generally, manga artists don’t get breaks. In contrast to the American comics industry, where franchises often go dormant between arcs and sometimes even get passed off to a new creative team, most manga tend to keep going and going until they reach their end. Far too often, when a manga does go on hiatus, it’s because the artist has reached some sort of physical or mental breaking point and absolutely needs to take time off as quickly as possible.

So it may have caused some readers concern when manga artist Nikiichi Tobita announced on Wednesday through his Twitter account that his series, which he’s been drawing since September of 2022, won’t be releasing a new chapter on July 19, despite its regular publishing schedule being new chapters on the 2nd and 19th of every month.

Don’t worry about Tobita, though, as there’s a very happy reason for the hiatus. See, Tobita is the artist for Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree, a manga adaptation of smash hit video game Elden Ring, and Tobita wants to take time off to play the game’s long-awaited DLC expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, which comes out this Friday.

The statement, accompanied by a self-portrait of Tobita happily dreaming about one of the new monsters teased in Shadow of the Erdtree’s preview video, reads:

This is Nikiichi Tobita. Thank you all for continuing to read The Road to the Erdtree.

It’s two days until Elden Ring’s download content, Shadow of the Erdtree, goes on sale! I’m looking forward to it just as much as you are. So, and I apologize for this, so that I can play the DLC I’d like to put the manga series on temporary hiatus. The effect on the schedule will be that we won’t be releasing a new chapter on July 19. Thank you for your understanding, and let’s all meet up in the Lands of Shadow!!

Despite the ravenous-for-content image often associated with manga fans, online responses to Tobita’s announcement have been overwhelmingly positive.

“Totally understandable The DLC is finally almost here!”
“I mean, yeah, you gotta take time off for that.”
“Please enjoy the DLC! I’m looking forward to it becoming part of the manga too.”
“In a sense, you could say you’re going on a business research trip to the Lands of Shadow.”
“I’m taking the release day off from work too!”

Come to think of it, we probably shouldn’t expect Mr. Sato to get much work done this Friday either.

Pizza Hut adds burgers to its menu in Japan for a limited time

20:13 cherishe 0 Comments

New lineup gives us good reason to say “Pizza Beautiful Day”!

Earlier this month, Pizza Hut wowed its customers in Japan with a new “Guilty ‘Ura’ Menu” (“Guilty ‘Secret’ Menu“), consisting of the following three new menu items.

▼ The “Pizza no Ii Toko Kasanete Hitoguchi Ura Hut Melts” (“Secret Hut Melts With All the Best Pizza Parts Layered in One Bite”), priced at 1,580 yen (US$10).

▼ The “Mayochiki de Chicken wo Hasanda Ura Pizza Sando (“Pizza Sandwich With Chicken Inside a Mayo-Chicken Pizza”). priced at 780 yen.

▼ And the “Tabetai Chicken Zenbu Iri Ura Side Box” (“Secret Side Box With All the Chicken You Want”), priced at 1,580 yen.

While those three tasty new meals were only meant to be on the menu from 7-16 June, they proved to be so popular that the chain has decided to bring them back for an extended period, and this time they’re adding two new items to the Secret Menu for a limited time.

As the above image shows, the two new items coming our way are burgers, which is a brand new development for Pizza Hut. The first new burger is called the “Pizza-ya na no ni Rice Chicken Burger” (“Even Though It’s a Pizza Chain, Rice Chicken Burger”), and it contains two rice “buns” with a bulgogi and tatsuta chicken filling.

The rice patties are browned with soy sauce and made from 100-percent domestically produced rice, while the filling contains a flavourful mayonnaise sauce, bulgogi beef, and chives — three ingredients from Pizza Hut’s popular bulgogi pizza. Mozzarella cheese and gouda cheese bring everything together, giving us a fusion pizza burger filled with familiar flavours.

The other burger, the “Pizza-ya na no ni Chicken & Chicken Burger” (“Even Though It’s a Pizza Chain, Chicken & Chicken Burger”), looks just as tantalising.

This one swaps out the buns for Japanese-style tatsuta chicken pieces, adding an extra layer of meaty flavour to the bulgogi pizza filling. The chain says this one is hard to eat, but delicious, and both burgers have an addictive flavour that will fulfil all your guilty desires, leaving you feeling satisfied and full afterwards.

We certainly weren’t expecting Pizza Hut to be the place to go for burgers, or chicken for that matter, but judging by the look of these two new menu items, we’ll definitely be giving them a try while they’re available. Priced at 780 yen each, the two burgers, and the three other Guilty ‘Secret’ Menu items, will only be in stores for 12 days, from 19-30 June.

Taiwan’s most beautiful politician kicks groper in balls during visit to Japan

18:13 cherishe 0 Comments

Thanks Japanese police for response, says attacker wasn’t Japanese.

Last Saturday night, Chihning Ho was walking outside Otsuka Station in Tokyo when a man, holding an extra-large canned highball in one hand and visibly intoxicated, approached her. With steps stumbling and speech slurred, the man repeatedly called out in both Japanese and English to Ho, who was visiting Japan from Taiwan, and regardless of how many times she waved him off or changed the direction she was walking, he continued to follow her.

▼ Video of the incident

Ho, who is a politician representing a district of the Taiwanese city of Hsinchu and known to some as “Taiwan’s most beautiful politician,” then ducked into a bookstore. Still, the man continued to pursue her, even as she purposely walked a winding route around the store’s aisles. Then, as Ho exited the store, the man grabbed her twice on the butt.

At this point Ho had had more than enough of the man’s nonsense, so she turned around and kicked him in the balls.

▼ The crippling-pain aftermath of the kick can be seen at the point in the video cued here.

Ho then contacted the police, who arrived on the scene and arrested the man.

With the incident getting attention in both Japan and Taiwan, Ho posted an update to her Instagram account on June 18, clarifying that the unpleasant experience hadn’t soured her on Japan as a nation. According to Ho, the groper is not a Japanese citizen, although she says that she has not confirmed what his nationality is, and added, “Even though this happened to me in Japan, I have no ill will towards the country.” She also expressed her gratitude to the Japanese police for apprehending the man and for providing an interpreter so that she could make her statement in her native language, and said she has every intention of visiting Japan again in the future.

▼ Ho’s follow-up post

At the same time, Ho said the incident has served as a reminder for young female travelers to remain diligent when in an unfamiliar environment, and to take precautions to protect themselves when help is not immediately available.

Amazing papercraft kit looks, and even sounds, just like the Nintendo Famicom【Photos】

11:13 cherishe 0 Comments

Celebrate the 40th (or 41st ) birthday of Nintendo’s game-changing video game console by putting together a perfect paper replica.

Any video game fan with an appreciation for the history of the hobby will tell you that the above photo shows the Famicom, Nintendo’s groundbreaking video game console which would later go on to be rebranded as the NES overseas and completely revolutionize the global gaming industry. And yet, that’s actually not a picture of a Famicom, but instead an awesomely detailed, precisely scaled papercraft recreation.

Japanese publisher Shogakukan puts out a monthly magazine called Televi-kun, with info on anime and tokusatsu TV series. The magazine also often contains papercraft projects, and while Televi-kun’s primary audience is little kids, the fidelity of the kits often attracts the attention of adult arts and crafts fans too, and that goes double, or even 40 times over, for the upcoming nostalgia-heavy “40 Year of Famicom” Televi-kun special edition.

▼ The magazine’s cover

You could nitpick the “40th anniversary angle,” what with the Famicom having been released in July of 1983, 41 years ago. There’s no denying, though, that this is an amazing piece of retro gaming art, and it’s also got some functionality built in.

For starters, the controllers can be either docked to the sides of the console or removed, just like the real thing. That protrusion in the middle of the Famicom base is actually an ejection slider, and pushing it forward will pop up the papercraft Super Mario Bros. cartridge that’s part of the kit so you can remove it, once again mirroring the way the actual Famicom worked.

But the coolest trick of all involves the Player 1 controller. Not only are the D-pad, start, select, and A and B buttons all pressable, they all make noises taken from Super Mario Bros., Shogakukan promises, ostensibly coming from some sort of speaker that comes bundled with the kit which you build the controller around.

▼ Between this and that life-size vibrating Master Sword that plays music, it’s a good time to be a Nintendo-oriented audiophile.

Also included in Televi-kun’s 40 Year of Famicom special edition are a notebook with Mario and Goomba pixel art on the interior pages…

…a set of stickers featuring old-school character artwork from Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Xevious, The Tower of Druaga, Legend of Valkyrie, Nobunaga’s Ambition, Mega Man, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, and TwinBee

…and a pair of posters, one reproducing the front of the box the Famicom came in, and another a collection of famous Famicom game box covers.

And yes, there’s even stuff to read inside the magazine, with interviews with Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda), Yuji Horii (creator of Dragon Quest, Kou Shibusawa (founder of Koei), and Takahashi Meijin (spokesperson for Hudson).

Though officially listed as the August issue of Televi-kun, the 40 Year of Famicom special edition is scheduled to go on sale “around July 1,” priced at 2,860 yen (US$18.50).
