Japanese airport offering 19,250-yen sandwiches as last Japan meal for international travelers

If you want one last taste of Japanese luxury, Kansai International Airport has a restaurant that says it can give it to you in just five minutes.

With delicious food being one of the major things that draws travelers to Japan, many people are going to want to splurge on something luxurious for their last meal in the country. On the other hand, with Japan also having tons of non-food-related stuff to see and do, your itinerary might be so full that you don’t have time to slot in anything other than something speedy from the airport before your flight home.

However, if you’re flying out of Japan from Kansai International Airport in Osaka, you can get something quick and decadent…and also very expensive, since Kobist will sell you a fast food sandwich that costs 19,250 yen (US$120).

That might sound like an extreme case of airport price-gouging, but this isn’t some ordinary convenience store sandwich (although even those are pretty tasty in Japan). Kobist’s name comes from Kobe, the city with the most exalted beef pedigree in all of Japan, and arguably the world, and the 19,250-yen menu item is their large-size Kobe beef steak sandwich.

Kobist, which opened this past summer, bills itself as a “luxury fast food” restaurant, with the goal of letting travelers enjoy the flavor of authentic Kobe beef even if they only have five minutes to spare. Located inside Terminal 1, in the area past the security check-in for international departures, Kobist is a new venture from Bifteck Kawamura (also known as Bifuteki no Kawamura), a Kobe steak specialist that’s been around since 1972. The chain’s flagship restaurant is in downtown Kobe, but they also have branches in Tokyo’s swanky Ginza and Roppongi districts.

So while Kobist is charging 19,250 yen for a sandwich, another way of looking at it is that they’re charging 19,250 yen for a large Kobe steak, which wouldn’t be a record-breaking price, and just serving it with bread wrapped around the meat rather than a dinner roll on the side.

And while Kobist isn’t a budget-priced eatery by any means, it does also have options quite a bit more affordable than its top-of-the-line large Kobe beef steak sandwich. The regular-size version, for example, is about half that price (9,900 yen), and the restaurant also has hamburgers starting at 3,300 yen and steak sandwiches from 3,850 yen made with other types of wagyu/Japanese beef.

Sure, none of those are a highly cost-effective way to fill up before your long flight home, but for meat-loving travelers who don’t know when, or if, they’ll be back in in the country, Kobist would definitely make for a memorable last Japan meal.
