Mister Donut releases new doughnuts that look and taste like Japanese sweet potatoes

Limited-edition collection serves up a taste of Japanese autumn with deliciously clever details.
Mister Donut is celebrating the arrival of autumn with five doughnuts inspired by one of Japan’s favourite seasonal ingredients: sweet potatoes. The limited-edition “Satsumaimo Do” collection features five varieties, each designed to capture the flavour and texture of Japanese sweet potatoes in a different way. The range first appeared in 2019 and has since become a popular seasonal offering, but this year the doughnuts have been given a new shape and thicker dough to make them look and feel even more like sweet potatoes.
The new shape is incredibly cute, as it’s designed to resemble three small sweet potatoes joined together. The dough is said to be equally impressive, with a soft, fluffy mouthfeel specially developed to mimic the texture of a freshly baked sweet potato.
▼ “Satsumaimo Do” combines the Japanese word for sweet potato (“satsumaimo”) with “do” (short for “doughnut”).

The five varieties range from simple sweet potato flavours to more indulgent dessert-inspired creations, with each doughnut made using dough containing 1.3 percent sweet potato powder.
▼ Satsumaimo Do Plain (183 yen [US$1.15] for takeout; 187 yen dine-in)

The simplest of the five, this doughnut lets the newly developed sweet potato dough take centre stage, so you can fully enjoy the flavour and soft, fluffy texture.
▼ Satsumaimo Do Stone-Roasted Sweet Potato-style (194 yen takeout; 198 yen dine-in)

The three-lobed doughnut is coated in a glaze inspired by Japanese stone-roasted sweet potatoes, adding a roasted sweetness to the soft sweet potato dough.
▼ Satsumaimo Do Melty Salted Butter (194 yen takeout; 198 yen dine-in)

The sweet potato doughnut is filled with a lightly salted butter sauce and finished with sugar. The sauce has a soft, gooey texture that adds a savoury-sweet contrast to the dough.
▼ Satsumaimo Do Fragrant Creme Brulee (216 yen takeout; 220 yen dine-in)

This version combines the soft sweet potato dough with a rich cream made with egg and a crisp brûlée sheet, creating a combination of creamy, crunchy and soft textures.
▼ Satsumaimo Do Rich Sweet Potato (216 yen takeout; 198 yen dine-in)

The sweet potato doughnut is filled with a rich sweet potato filling containing fresh cream, then baked in the oven to give the top a fragrant, roasted finish.
The Satsumaimo Do collection will be available at Mister Donut stores across Japan from 2 September, while stocks last.
