Five fun and fashionable items from Japan to stave off those winter chills

12

These products may actually have you enjoying wintertime!

The winter chill is still strong in Japan, with temperatures still dipping below freezing in many areas throughout the main island of Honshu. Older homes and apartments are notorious for their lack of insulation, making it hard to escape the biting cold. However, people come up with a lot of creative ways to stay cozy, and there are a number of ingenious products out there to help!

Today we’re looking at five fun and fashionable items from Japan that collectively will keep you warm you from head to toe.

1. Kanji scarves

These “literary masters” scarves are perfect for linguaphiles, particularly those fascinated by the Japanese writing system made up of kanji (Chinese characters), and the phonetic syllabaries that accompany it. The scarves feature works by famous Showa era (1926 to 1989) writers, with poet Chuya Nakahara’s “Yagi no Uta” (“Goat Songs”) on a striking blue background with white cloud accents. Quotes from foremost fiction writer Osamu Dazai’s internationally renowned novel “Ningen Shikkaku” (“No Longer Human”) cover a more neutral-colored beige background. Both blue and beige designs can be purchased from Village Vanguard’s online store for 4,536 yen (US$40) each.

2. USB-chargeable cat paw foot warmer

If you’re at all like me and can’t seem to warm your toes no matter how many socks and slippers you layer on, this super cute electric foot warmer is just what you need. You can plug it in to the nearest USB port for convenient charging, and it will keep your tootsies toasty! While its main purpose is to warm your feet, it can also be used for your hands, as back support while sitting for extended periods, or even as little pillow. For 2,800 yen  you can choose from leopard print or brown, available on Amazon.

3. Knight helmet knit cap

8Image: Takamiya

Conventional knit caps will keep your head and maybe your ears warm, but not much else. With this knit knight helmet from Takamiya, though, you can also protect your face from the frosty winter wind. This is great for people who find themselves looking a bit like Rudolph with a bright red nose in the cold.  The mask can then be pushed up and out of the way when not in use. We looked at some similar knit caps before, but these from Takamiya feature a different design, with extra length in the back to keep your neck warm as well. They are also lined with fleece for extra insulation, and come in black with red accents for 1,880 yen, or charcoal grey for 2,280 yen.

4. Cat paw mop slippers

Not only will these slippers keep your feet warm and looking purrfectly adorable, but they will also help keep your floors clean! The dual-purpose mop slippers come in three different colors, calico, black, and orange, for 2,160 yen a pair, and are made with a micro-fiber material that helps pick up and trap dirt and dust. The best thing about these slippers though has to be those little pink toes!

5. Damegi “human sleeping bag”

▼ Features include zip-up hood with eye holes, eye mask, five-finger gloves, and zippered bottom area for trips to the toilet.

While all of the above items are great at helping keep off the chill, the “damegi” full-body pajama suit goes above and beyond to keep you warm and cozy from head to toe. We looked at a “twin-tails” version a few months ago, but this one has its own perks. The front zips up completely to keep your entire head and face engulfed in warmth, and the gloves give you more dexterity and control, allowing you to do more without needing to expose your hands to the cold. Colors black, red, pink, and yellow are currently available on Amazon, and include kids sizes from 1,980 yen, small and medium from 2,680 to 3,680 yen, and extra-large for 24,450 yen.

We know that winter can be a dreadful, dreary time for many, but hopefully these products will help make the cold months a bit more bearable. We may have only a couple more weeks of winter here in the northern hemisphere, but for our readers down south now is the perfect time to start prepping!

HOW TO CONTOUR YOUR JAWLINE

TUTORIAL + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

I have a pretty healthy self esteem, but through the years have battled with a complex about my double chin. Especially my profile. And now that I’ve been a runner for 17 years, I have jowls too! Sigh. But I try to remind myself that there are more important issues in the world and if that’s my biggest problem, I’m doing alright! Still, don’t think I don’t contour it every day within an inch of its life! There are tricks I learned years ago in makeup school that have stayed with me. Like, when you shade your jawline, don’t sweep it along the whole area from your chin to your earlobe, because in between jowls and your chin there are already indentations that look more pronounced if shaded more. So you start where the jowls are, not at the chin, and go upward from there, then go back and double shade over just the jowls (sorry, every time I even write that word I cringe!). Then lift the chin up and shade where a double chin might hang. I didn’t use myself as a model to spare you all and used a real model who doesn’t have my problems, but you can get the gist of the techniques.

Tokyo, Osaka restaurants offering all-you-can-eat beef for two and a half bucks on Meat Day

oy-0

Limitless shabu-shabu for less than the price of a fast food beef bowl.

From its name, most people would expect Japanese restaurant chain Onyasai to offer a huge variety of salads and other vegetarian fare, After all, Onyasai literally translates to “warm vegetables,” and is usually used to refer to a medley of steamed veggies.

▼ Onyasai

oy-1

Ironically, though, Onyasai’ restaurants specialize in shabu-shabu, a type of meaty hotpot. That means the chain is eager to take part on Japan’s periodic “Meat Day” celebrations, often held when the date can be written with the numerals 2 and 9, which can be read as ni and ku, the components of the Japanese word niku, or “meat.”

So on February 9 (2-9), Onyasai will be offering all-you-can-eat beef for just 290 yen (US$2.50)

▼ All this will cost you less than a Yoshinoya beef bowl.

oy-2

However, this amazing deal is only available at two Onyasai locations: the branches in Tokyo’s Roppongi neighborhood and Osaka’s Umeda Kita Onyasai. But since we couldn’t bear to wait until February 9, we talked the staff at the Roppongi branch into giving us a sneak preview of the 290-yen course, and during the meal we managed to stop salivating just long enough to snap these photos.

oy-3

oy-4

oy-14

While all of the meat is juicy and delicious, the star of the show is the extra-thick sukiyaki, which is 29 millimeters (1.1-inch) thick.

oy-5

Like the other meat in the course, the extra-thick sukiyaki is Japanese kuroge wagyu beef. But while you can have unlimited refills of the other cuts of beef, the special Meat Day promotion only includes one serving of extra-thick sukiyaki per person in your party.

oy-6

oy-7

oy-8

On the upside, whereas shabu-shabu is usually a cook-it-yourself dish, the Onyasai staff will prepare the extra-thick sukiyaki for you right at your table.

oy-11

With our chopsticks quivering in anticipation, we brought a meaty morsel to our mouth…

oy-12

…and it just might have been the most delicious sukiyaki we’ve ever eaten!

oy-13

Given how popular the promotion is bound to be, making a reservation through Onasai’s smartphone app is advisable should you want in on this non-stop meat parade. If you see us there, give us a wave, but we’ll forgive you if you’re too busy eating to actually say hi.

Add colour to digital artworks instantly with new free web service

Artists in Japan and around the world are raving about this handy new tool.

The world of digital editing and design can be a difficult one to navigate for beginners more used to working with traditional materials like paint and paper. But now there’s an easy way to create digital masterpieces, thanks to a new web service that adds colour to your sketches at the touch of a button.

Developed by mechanical engineer @tai2an, the line drawing colouriser is called Paints Chainer, and it can work both automatically and semi-automatically, adding its own selection of hues to an image or allowing the artist to choose their preferred colour palette. The results are so impressive that artists from around the world have been enthusiastically sharing their artworks on Twitter.

These images show just how much difference a splash of colour can make to a line drawing. Whether it’s the simplest of line drawings…

…or the most detailed, these sketches are instantly brought to life with a variety of gorgeous hues.

▼ Paints Chainer works beautifully with moving images too.

The attention to dark and light shading is incredibly impressive, with points like the creases in this jacket given depth in the final result.

▼ The skin tones are also beautifully done.

The washed-out watercolour-style colours give images an ethereal, otherworldly look.

Paints Chainer chooses colours to fill in drawings on its own, or responds to hints from the artist to achieve personalised results.

It’s amazing to see how the same picture can take on a different appearance, depending on the colour palette used.

To try the new web service, you can visit the website here, or to see more beautiful artworks made with the handy tool, check out the hashtag #paintschainer on Twitter. And if you need to get started transforming your penciled illustrations into cleaner, more defined line drawings online, this other handy tool will help you get there!

Snowboarding anime fans hit the slopes while cosplaying as Gundam mecha【Video】

They’re called “mobile suits,” and snowboarding is a form of mobility, after all.

It’s hard to imagine now, but when the original Mobile Suit Gundam premiered on Japanese TV in 1979, it struggled to find an audience, and was temporarily cancelled due to low ratings. Today, though, it’s a very different story, and to date there are more than three dozen branches of the Gundam anime franchise, spanning TV, direct-to-video series and theatrical features.

Some of those are direct sequels to previous Gundam anime, while others take place in completely different settings with all-new characters. In tone, they range from gritty war dramas to unabashedly light-hearted toy commercials.

Really, the only constant in the world of Gundam is this: there will be more Gundam content in the future. And that’s apparently as true for real-world snowboarding mobile suits as it is for their anime counterparts, as shown in this video from Japanese Twitter user @Hiroooooki_n of a snowboarder who hit the slopes while simultaneously doing a bit of Gundam cosplay.

Whereas the mecha snowboarder we saw a few years back was dressed as the heroic RX-78-2 Gundam, this time it was the show-stealing Char-custom Zaku that was carving through the powder. While its anime pilot, Car Aznable, is ostensibly the villain of the original series, his charisma and talent made him a fan favorite, elevating him to a position sort of like the Darth Vader of Japan and landing him endorsement deals as a pitchman for both cars and cakes.

The snowboarder’s costume is extremely detailed, faithfully reproducing the asymmetrical shields and spikes of the Zaku’s upper body, and even includes its standard-issue beam rifle. Nevertheless, the boarder deftly makes his way down the slope, and even strikes a few cool poses for the camera along the way.

It seems there was also a snowboarder cosplaying as the more darkly painted Dom mobile suit in the vicinity, although no videos of it in action have yet surfaced.

▼ Perhaps because Doms are known for going out on combat maneuvers in teams of three, and his two buddies didn’t show up.

With Japan still having a few more weeks of ski season left, the ball is now in other outdoorsy anime fans’ court to bring other mobile suits out to play in the snow.
