Looks like it’s time to say good-bye, and maybe good riddance, to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics logo

22:09 cherishe 0 Comments

OL 1

There hasn’t been a lot of love for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics’ logo, which was officially unveiled by the event’s Organising Committee at the tail-end of July. Almost immediately after getting their first eyeful of it, many in Japan called it unappealing and confusing, and just a few days later some were calling it plagiarized.

In other words, not too many people were looking forward to seeing the emblem plastered all over the city during the Games, as well as the years leading up to them. The good news for the logo’s detractors is that they probably won’t have to, as the organizers of the Tokyo Olympics seem ready to officially withdraw the design for their promotion.

Graphic designer Kenjiro Sano submitted the embattled design, and given his previous work with such high-profile clients as automaker Toyota and cellphone service provider au, most people expected an original, attractive work from the experienced designer. Almost immediately, though, the local reaction was cool to the heavily stylized T (meant to stand for “Tokyo, Team, Tomorrow”) that the Organising Committee had chosen, which is decidedly cold and stiff compared to the circle of cherry blossoms in the colors of the Olympic rings that had been used to promote Tokyo’s prior status as a mere candidate to host the 2020 games.

A subsequent allegation of plagiarism from French designer Oliver Debie, citing similarities between Sano’s design and Debie’s for a Belgian theater, didn’t help the situation, and even trying to imagine Sano’s logo as a cute bird hasn’t been enough to sway significant public support towards it. Add in accusations that other designs Sano presented to the Organising Committee as examples of his previous work were actually lifted from the Internet, and it looks as though the 2020 Olympics is ready to cut ties with him. NHK reports that the 2020 Olympics’ “Organising Committee has solidified its course of not using Sato’s design.”

Thankfully, there are still five years to go until the games open, and several other artists seem eager to offer their alternative logos. Still, with the Games now facing the possibility of having to make up for false starts for both their logo and stadium, it’s going to take a Herculean effort for the 2020 Olympics to get everything ready in time.

Cosplay for pets! Dog fashion retailer selling Attack on Titan capes, uniforms

21:10 cherishe 0 Comments

AD 0

In recent years, it’s become increasingly popular for doting dog-owners in Japan to dress up their pets in little outfits when they head out for a walk. But since their canine companions are already equipped with a natural coat, all doggy fashion is really doggy cosplay, so why not dress your dog up like a member of the cast of smash-hit anime Attack on Titan?

Online dog clothing shop Sniff, which sells its wares through Rakuten’s marketplace, recently unveiled its Attack on Titan Survey Corps cape.

Attack on Titan’s protagonist Eren has now been shown up by Mikasa, Levi, and this adorable pooch.

AD 1

Featuring the Wings of Freedom insignia on the back and a stylish hood, the cape actually opens and closes with a Velcro strip along its front, meaning you can have your pet ready to go out scouting for Titans in just seconds.

AD 2

The Survey Corps cape is priced at 3,780 yen (US$31.50) and is available in three sizes: small, which measures 28 centimeters (11 inches) around the neck and 13 centimeters in length, medium (30 centimeters neck, 19 centimeters length) and large (40 centimeters neck, 25 centimeters length).

If you feel like your dog would be practically naked wearing just the cape, though, you can also opt for Sniff’s full Survey Corps uniform.

AD 3

The more complex design costs 7,344 yen, and is available in a variety of sizes ranging from 21 to 35 centimeters in neck circumference and 22 to 43 centimeters in length.

AD 4

Preorders for both outfits are being taken now (cape here, uniform here) with shipment scheduled for early November. The cut-off date for orders is November 4, so don’t delay if you’ve got a dog who loves to sit on your lap as you watch anime.

Tear-jerking Thai commercial is about stabbing of a homeless man – Can you guess what it’s for?

20:10 cherishe 0 Comments

TC 0

Making the viewer feel good is a time-tested method of crafting an effective commercial. Gather a bunch of attractive people, have them frolic in beautiful surroundings for 30 seconds, and at the end subtly slip in your product, implying that you too could be having this much fun with this brand of car/beer/athlete’s foot medication.

Thai advertisers, though, sometimes decide to take a different tack, with emotionally devastating commercials that seem designed to reduce all who watch them to blubbering piles of streaming tears and seeping sympathy. Case in point: this new ad with man’s inhumanity to man as its central theme features dialogue such as “What the f*** are you smiling at?”, terrible violence, and a completely unexpected final purpose.

As the ad opens, we’re introduced to its two unnamed central characters, who we’ll Newsstand Owner and Homeless Guy. As you may have guessed, Homeless Guy doesn’t have a place of his own, so he spends every night sleeping on the sidewalk in front of Newsstand Owner’s place of business.

TC 1

Newsstand Owner is none too pleased about this, and often wakes Homeless Guy up by dousing him with a pail of cold water before sending him off for the day with cheery words such as…

TC 2

Through most of it, Homeless Guy keeps a good-natured smile on his face, and early on the music seems to imply that this is more an Odd Couple-esque comedy than a real look into the hardships of homelessness. Things take a turn for the serious, though, when Newsstand Owner opens up his shutter one day and is greeted by the unmistakable smell of urine. Furious, he delivers a swift kicks to the slumbering Homeless Guy, who dashes off to escape the shopkeeper’s wrath.

And then things get really dark.

Opening up for business the next day, for the first time in the video, Newsstand Owner doesn’t find Homeless Guy stretched out in front of his shop.

TC 3

When the sprawled squatter’s absence stretches to three consecutive days, the concerned Newsstand Owner decides to check the footage from his security camera, which is pointed at the sidewalk in front of his store through the night, and for the first time sees what Homeless Guy has really been up to every night. Rather than just loafing until sunrise, he was picking up trash in front of Newsstand Owner’s business, and the video not only exonerates him of guilt in the urinating instance, but shows that he chased off the actual pisser, as well as one would-be graffiti vandal.

TC 4

TC 5

But it’s not just petty crimes Homeless Guy has been protecting Newsstand Owner from. Later footage shows two burglars attempting to break into the store, and when Homeless Guy confronts them, he first takes a beating…

TC 6

TC 7

…and then a knife to the gut.

TC 8

TC 9

TC 10

As Newsstand Owner breaks down and cries for his fallen acquaintance, more cynical viewers may be wondering why, three days after the incident, the police haven7t bothered to tell Newsstand Owner that they picked a corpse up off the pavement in front of his store. More compassionate individuals, though, will probably be saying “Yes, yes, we must improve our treatment of the homeless and other poverty-stricken segments of society,” especially when the commercial’s tagline finally shows up, which reads:

“There’s much more truth that you are blind too…”

Okay, so next comes the part where the ad tells us which charities and homeless shelters we should donate too, right?

Nope! What the commercial really wants you to do is purchase A Vizer-brand security camera.

TC 11

After all, without one, how are you supposed to witness all of the heart-breaking violent crime that happens when you’re not around? Still, we hope Newsstand Owner turned the video over to the police to aid in tracking down Homeless Guy’s killers, and that this serves as a lesson for the shopkeeper to not only show a little more compassion to others, but also to check his security footage more often than just once every three days.

KFC Japan celebrates Colonel’s birthday with all-you-can-eat fried chicken, free for some kids

19:08 cherishe 0 Comments

KF 1

One of the upsides to being a little kid is that you can get presents even on someone else’s birthday. But like getting your food pre-cut into bite-sized pieces and having older people carry you around when you’re tired, you can only expect to receive bags of party favors up to a certain age.

A rare exception to this, though, is the birthday of Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Harland Sanders. To celebrate Sanders’ birthday, KFC Japan is offering all-you-can eat fried chicken, but the unlimited bird is just part of the chain’s generosity on that special day.

KFC has come up with all sorts of ways to cook and season chicken over the years, including some that are only available in Japan. However, to honor the memory of Sanders, who’s more commonly known as “Uncle Kentucky” in Japan, this all-you-can-eat deal, which is available on September 9, is just for the Colonel’s Original Recipe version.

▼ The amount pictured here could be just the beginning of your meal.

KF 2

But just as man shall not live on bread alone, neither shall he do so on Original Recipe. In addition to chicken, diners can also have as many French fries and soft drink refills as they desire. Women also get a free dessert, though unfortunately there’s no equivalent substitute, like a free beer, for men.

The cost for adults is just 1,500 yen (US$12.50), while for elementary school-age kids it’s an even cheaper 1,000 yen. Younger children, amazingly, can eat for free.

Not every KFC Japan branch is participating in the campaign, presumably to prevent the entire country from running out of chicken. Still, 105 branches will be serving up endless orders of fried chicken. The complete list can be found here, and reservations are required for the all-you-can-eat promotion.

Those in Tokyo will be able to get their fix at the following KFC branches:

● Gotanda
● Gakugei Daigaku
● Yutenji
● Heiwajima
● Omori Nishiguchi
● Denen Chofu
● Sangenjaya
● Kyodo
● Seijo
● Ebisu Ekimae
● Tobu Nerima Ekimae

Also, bear in mind that while the chicken, fries, and drinks may be limitless, the meal itself is limited to 45 minutes. Honestly, though, after 45 minutes of devouring fried chicken non-stop, we think we’ll be plenty full.

Four-panel comic perfectly encapsulates returning to school after summer ends

18:09 cherishe 0 Comments

class 1

Those dog days of summer are turning into sweet school days as students around the world are getting ready to go back to school for fall. In Japan, their summer vacation has already finished and a familiar scene is probably playing out in high schools across the country.

But don’t take our word for it, ding dong ding dong, there goes the bell. Here comes our teacher, Iron Man sensei!

Twitter user @AXLLOWS used a few figures to reenact a scene that commonly takes place at the end of summer in Japan. Students will come back from a “wild” vacation and chat with their classmates who they haven’t seen in a month or so. Some of the more rebellious students, despite all their teachers’ warnings, have dyed their hair, which is strictly against school regulations.

▼ “Gohan, did you change your hair?!”
“Mm, yeah, I guess.”

class 1

▼ “Alright, is everyone in their se…huh?”

class 2

▼ “Gohan, what the heck is this hair?!”

class 3

▼ “This is what happens to those who don’t follow school regulations!!!”

class 4

▼ “A very common scene after the end of summer.”

It’s also apparent that your teacher will always show the most energy when yelling at students about breaking school regulations. Poor Krillin, he didn’t even do anything and yet as per usual, and he got injured too. It just goes to show you, if Iron Man is your teacher, you probably shouldn’t mess with him. And, as always, if your name is Krillin, get out of any situation possible…you are a danger to yourself.
