Expectations run high as Death Note team begins new series — this time about angels!
Opinions may be divided on the live action TV drama version of Death Note that began airing in July this year, but we think it’s still a pretty awesome series, and judging from the long-standing popularity of the manga, it’s probably safe to say that we’re not the only ones who feel that way.
And now, fans will be delighted to hear that the team of writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Ken Obata, who created the Death Note comics have once again joined forces and will soon be starting a brand new manga serialization titled Platinum End!
The news was officially announced in this week’s edition of Weekly Shone Jump magazine which came out on September 28, and according to the announcement, the new manga will be appearing in the monthly Jump Square magazine starting from the December edition to be released on November 4. It will also be made available in digital format simultaneously.
▼ The news was also tweeted on Jump Square’s Twitter account. Based on the illustration, it certainly looks like we can look forward to more of the fantastically delicate artwork that we enjoyed in Death Note.

This will be the third piece of work to be produced by tbe Ohba and Obata duo. Bakuman, the second comic series they created after Death Note, was also a big hit, with a live action film adaptation to be released this weekend, so it’s not surprising that manga fans are already looking forward to Platinum End with considerable anticipation, especially as it’s been three and a half years from their last collaborative effort since the completion of Bakuman.
Platinum End will apparently be “a story about humans and angels“, as you may have guessed from the stunning white feathers portrayed in the illustration, with a teenage boy who feels very little hope in his life as the protagonist.
Although we don’t know what to expect yet, you would imagine that a story involving angels will take us in the opposite direction of the dark world of Death Gods that we saw in Death Note … or will it? We guess many fans will be waiting anxiously for November to see what the new series will bring. We know we certainly will be looking forward to it!
