This Burn Survivor’s Makeup Transformations Are Stunning
Shalom “Blac” Nchom is not your typical beauty blogger.
The 20-year-old Nigerian stunner, known on YouTube and Instagram for her masterful makeup tutorials, was just nine years old when an accident left her permanently scarred.
Nchom was inside her family’a store when a frying pan full of hot oil spilled onto her. The horrific incident left Nchom’s head, face and neck covered in painful third-degree burns.
As the burns turned into permanent scars, Nchom realized people had begun to look at her differently. She tells BuzzFeed:
I was stared at by kids and older people whenever I stepped out. I felt like a living statue that people came to see. It pushed me to be rude towards anyone that stared at me. I cursed people out and cried on many occasions.
Nchom realized she could make one of two choices: She could continue sitting around and feeling sorry for herself, or she could do something about it.
She picked the latter, teaching herself how to apply makeup like a pro.
The same classmates that made fun of her scars began offering to pay Nchom to do their makeup.
She usually charged them between $5 and $25 for a makeover.
Though doing classmates’ makeup was an easy way to earn extra cash…
…Nchom preferred to use her talent and story to inspire and give courage to others.
She hopes her viewers and fans “can not only learn how to do makeup, but to learn to live and love themselves for who they truly are.”
For Nchom, embracing inner beauty is for more important than flaunting outer beauty.
“You should love yourself either way,” she adds, “makeup or no makeup.”
