Even big scary monsters need love too.

When most people think of the giant sea-serpent Pokémon Gyarados, they think of a terrifying ocean monster ready to do battle. After all it is literally called the “atrocious Pokémon” according to the games, so Gyarados being in love isn’t usually the first thing on most trainer’s minds when they encounter.

But now, thanks to Japanese Twitter artist @pkpksp1058, it may be time to rethink that.

They recently posted a Pokémon fan comic which has since amassed over 150,000 retweets in just a few days. We don’t want to spoil anything, so take a look at the short comic below: (scroll down for translation)

“The Story of Gyarados and Milotic.”

I am a Gyarados. Even though I look like this, I have a timid nature.

But ever since I evolved, others think I’m in an undersea gang…

…and my face is now so scary it makes children cry.

I’m also much stronger, and everyone is too scared to come near me.

“Gyarados-kun! Good morning!”
Except for my girlfriend.

She recently moved to this part of the sea and I don’t know why, but she really likes me.

“Look! Look!”
“Oh Milotic-san, you look so beautiful today.”
“…huh?”
“Who is that next to y-“

“GYARADOS?!”

“Why are you with a Gyarados?!”
“Milotic-san, you’re going to be eaten!”

“Is he blackmailing her to be around him?”
“He’s so scary.”
This happens to us pretty much every day.

“…um, so why do you want to be with me anyway?”

“I have a scary face like this, and I might rage someday and hurt you.”
“…”

That’s a really ugly Pokémon.
It’s weak and has no use.
Ugh, just go away, will you?

“Hey, are you all right?”
“You look like you’re really hurt!”

“Oh wow, you can use tackle?! That’s amazing!”
“I’m so jealous.”
“I think you’re really cool.”

“…”

“Tee hee… it’s a secret.”

Even if we move far away, or evolve, let’s be friends forever.

And we still are.

Magikarp used attract! It’s super effective!

For those who aren’t aware, the ridiculously weak Magikarp evolves into Gyarados, and the “ugly” Feebas evolves into the beautiful Milotic, making this a cute little tale about judging based on appearances.

Here’s how Japanese Twitter responded:

“I was moved to tears.”
“What a heartwarming story.”
“Does he really have a ‘timid’ nature? Seems more like ‘gentle’ to me.”
“Um, Magikarp can learn tackle too….”
“It’s not at a high enough level yet! Stop wrecking the beautiful love story!”
“Sequel please!”

▼ It may not be an official sequel, but one netizen was so moved that they put a
Gyarados and Milotic in daycare together and they had a baby Feebas. So cute!

This really proves yet again that Magikarp (and maybe Feebas too) is really best Pokémon out there. It is, after all, one of the best-translated Pokémon, and you can even beat all of Pokémon Sun/Moon with it, so what more do you need?
