Japanese fashion company’s modernized haori half coats will keep you warm and samurai chic
Love samurai-inspired fashion but hate the cold? Then you might want to add these warm Japanese-style half coats to your wardrobe this winter.
We recently looked at a line of clothing that combines traditional Japanese men’s clothing such as kimono and hakama with avant-garde flourishes. The coats seen here might not be as gaudily eye-catching, but their elegant, downplayed style makes them a less ostentatious choice for citizens of the 21st century.
When the weather gets chilly, there’s a short coat called a haori that’s worn over a kimono. While they’ve been around for centuries, Japanese fashion brand Trove has just released two new haori that make use of modern materials that provide a level of warmth and comfort Japan’s feudal warriors could only have imagined.
Shown above is Trove’s navy wool haori, which has a wool shell and a lining made from cupra rayon, renowned for its lightness and softness. What’s more, the chic, understated design is such that Trove says the wool haori can be paired with contemporary, western-style clothing, as demonstrated by the model here.
If you’re looking for something a little bit more colorful, there’s also the ventile haori.
Somewhat confusingly, this golden garment also has a wool shell. Instead of cupra, though, the lining is ventile, the flax-like fabric developed for the British Royal Air Force.
Both coats’ two-layer construction help to block the cold and retain body heat, and their modern materials give them yet another boost in that regard. Trove is currently taking orders for the wool and ventile haori, which are identically priced at 29,700 yen (US$248), through its online shop here, with shipment scheduled for mid-December.
