These girls ain’t loyal: Lies ladies tell according to Japan’s Twitter users both male and female

In Japan, a recent trending Twitter hashtag, #don’tbelievegirlswhentheysay has people talking.  Do any of these sound familiar to you?

Those of us who’ve grown up with girl parts or seen the movie Mean Girls know that girls will often say certain nice things to each other while thinking the exact opposite. Of course, both sexes have it in them to be duplicitous, but girls seem to get a bad rap for intentionally laying on the honey when what they really want to say is sourer and more stinging than lime juice on a fresh paper cut.

Recently, Japan’s twitter users have been amusing each other by sharing tales of these two-faced sayings, under the hashtag “josei no shinjite wa ikenai kotoba” or #don’tbelievegirlswhentheysay. Let’s take a look at some of them and see if any of them ring true!

“Ooh, you got a boyfriend? I’m so happy for you! I hope it goes well! (Huh?! How did SHE get a boyfriend before I did?! Totally unbelievable! Whatever, she’ll be dumped soon enough anyway!)”

▲  “Let’s train for a marathon…together!”

▲  “Oh, I hate my face, I’m so ugly! But wait, let me take a selfie. Click!”

▲  “OMG I’m so fat I can’t even believe it! (actually, I’m only 40 kilograms/88 pounds soaking wet, mahaha!)”

▲  “Actually, I eat a lot! I just have a really fast metabolism!”

▲  “Actually I didn’t even study at all!”

▲  “I don’t even like guys that everyone else thinks are hot!”

▲  “I prefer what’s inside to a person’s looks!”

▲  “I don’t find dirty jokes amusing at all!”

 “Let’s hang out again sometime!”

“I promise I won’t tell anyone if you let me know who you have a crush on!”

“Sorry, I don’t use LINE” (the mega-famous instant messaging app that everybody and their grandma uses in Japan…)

“I never go on Twitter! I don’t even understand how to use it haha!”

“Sure, I have cute friends I can introduce you to!”

“Sorry, I fell asleep and never saw your text!”

“Sorry, my phone’s battery died/I left my phone at home!”

“You’re so nice! I’m sure you could get a girlfriend easily!”

“One time a girl told me, ‘I promise I won’t get mad if you tell me what you did’, so I told her and she punched my face in. I won’t fall for that again.”

Yeowch! It sounds like these particular tweeters have had some bad experiences with some two-faced females. Since there’re always two sides to every story, we can’t wait for the follow-up hashtag #don’tbelieveguyswhentheysay to start trending! If you can’t wait that long, here’s an article from earlier this year where Japanese women list the top 10 lies they can spot the moment a guy says them.

Wouldn’t it be sweet if we could all just be honest with each other? Or would that only lead to anarchy, broken hearts, and severed friendships galore?
