This Woman Had The Ultimate Comeback When A Stranger Tried To Body Shame Her

I think we need to take a moment to remember this golden rule: If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything. Especially when it comes to other people’s bodies.

Body shaming isn’t just something that only happens in comments on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, either. It happens in person too, by total strangers.

Brynne Huffman experienced this firsthand. She was running errands when a total stranger made a comment about her shorts. But Huffman was quick on her feet and fired back the ultimate comeback.

Huffman described exactly what went down in a Facebook post, along with a positive message (and reminder) for how we should be treating plus-size women — and people in general. Here’s what happened.

Huffman was standing in line at FedEx between two other women. She was wearing a typical summer outfit — a white blouse, mid-thigh length denim shorts and flip-flops. The woman in front of her, who was in her 60s, started making small talk with Huffman until it was her turn in line.

Huffman turned to the woman behind her, who was wearing a T-shirt that said “COEXIST,” and started chatting with her. And that’s when this woman forgot the golden rule. She said, “Your hair really is amazing. You should probably rethink the shorts, though.”

According to her Facebook post, this is how Huffman responded to the body shamer:

My face instantly flushes, not out of embarrassment but anger. No, not anger. Rage. This, as my head slowly tilts to the side. If you’ve seen me really angry, you know what I mean.

My fists clenched up. I know this because I felt my nails digging into my palms. So many things ran through my head. Because I don’t have time to get arrested today, what came out was this:

‘You should probably rethink your shirt.’

Damn.

Here’s the outfit Huffman was wearing.

I honestly can’t imagine what I would say in that situation, but Huffman was ready to go. While she definitely had more to say to this rude stranger, she managed to keep her cool and come out as the bigger person.

Later on, she took to Facebook to point out the deeper meaning of the short interaction. She used this situation to promote the message that women should build each other up instead of trying to knock each other down.
