What do Magic: The Gathering and Idolmaster have in common? Apparently, quite a bit!

Internet memes are an incredibly strange and malleable beast, and you can never tell what the next meme that pops up will be about. Some memes are so strange that you would never believe there is a thriving community of people who keep them alive like, “draw yourself as a high school boy” or the reverse, “draw yourself as a high school girl”.

There is a meme right now that is so oddly specific, you have to wonder where they came up with the idea. It crosses The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls and Magic: The Gathering, and it might just blow your mind.

On Twitter, you can find the hashtag “#モバマスの画像をアップすると近い構図のmtgのカードが送られてくる”, which roughly translates to “#upload an image from Idolmaster and we will find a corresponding Magic: The Gathering card”. People have been uploading images from mobile games The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls and The Idolmaster: Side M, whereupon other users match them up with cards from Magic. We aren’t sure how people find the time to comb through the over 14,000 Magic: The Gathering cards that exist to find a piece of art that matches one from an anime game, but perhaps some people just have an encyclopedic knowledge of Magic card art.

The side-by-side comparisons reveal that the matches aren’t picture perfect, but the hashtag has produced some pretty amusing results. Here are a few of our favorites below (original tweets can be found at the end of the article).

It just goes to show you that anything can be accomplished given the seemingly infinite time available to the masses on the Internet. The meme does seem to answer one mystery though, either Idolmaster artists are looking at Magic: The Gathering cards for inspiration, or there are only a limited number of action-style poses that can be used as card art and humanity has exhausted them all.
