The NHK special documentary follows Miyazaki as he comes out of retirement to work on his next projects.

Since he first shocked fans with news of his retirement in 2013, Studio Ghibli director and beloved animator Hayao Miyazaki has been back in the studio numerous times, whether it’s just out of habit, to work on his next short animated film, or to prepare for one more full-length animated feature.

And so it seems fitting that the documentary about the man who just can’t give up animation is titled Owaranai Hito — literally “One Who Doesn’t End.”

▼ The cover of the DVD shows Miyazaki
in his natural state of “not ending.”

The documentary, which aired last year as an NHK special, follows the famed director over two years as he worked on Kemushi no Boro (Boro the Caterpillar), the short animation that will be exclusively aired at the Studio Ghibli Museum, and as he moved forward with plans to create another full-length film.

Owaranai Hito – Miyazaki Hayao, as it is titled in full, is now on sale on DVD through Amazon Japan and Rakuten, starting at 3,023 yen (US$26.91). The DVD is an extended 70-minute version of the documentary and is non-narrated, allowing the story to tell itself as it unfolds. It does ship globally, but the DVD is region-specific so you’ll want to make sure you have the means to play Region 2 DVDs in your country.

Like Miyazaki, this DVD may be around for a while or it may be gone soon. But if you’re a fan of the man and want to add this to your collection, you may not want to take any chances!
